Overview

The Department of Civil Engineering, SSES, organized an industrial site visit to RSPL Construction Company as part of its commitment to experiential and industry-integrated learning. The visit provided students with direct, hands-on exposure to ongoing construction activities at an active project site, enabling them to observe, analyse, and appreciate the gap between classroom theory and professional engineering practice.

The site featured three major focus areas: (i) Vacuum Dewatered Flooring (VDF) — a modern technique for producing high-strength, durable concrete floors; (ii) Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) — engineered systems for treating wastewater before discharge or reuse; and (iii) Multi-Level Parking Structure — an urban infrastructure solution addressing space constraints. Together, these areas offered a comprehensive view of contemporary civil engineering practice.

Objectives of Event

The following objectives guided the planning and execution of the site visit:

1.      To understand the practical implementation of VDF flooring, including materials, equipment, step-by-step execution, and quality control measures employed on-site.

2.      To expose students to real-time construction activities and enhance understanding of theoretical concepts through direct field observation.

3.      To familiarize students with construction site management and safety practices — including workflow coordination, quality assurance, and adherence to industry and IS-code standards.

4.      To observe the design, components, and operation of a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) and understand its role in environmental protection and water resource management.

5.      To study the structural and functional aspects of a multi-level parking facility, including design principles, materials, and traffic circulation systems.

6.      To encourage students to connect academic learning with professional practice and develop an appreciation for industry standards and project management in civil engineering.
