Overview

Sharda School of Humanities and Social Science, Sharda University is organizing a talk on Feminism, Media, and Stereotypes for the undergrad and postgrad students.

Feminism, media, and stereotypes are deeply intertwined domains that shape how individuals perceive gender roles and equality in contemporary society. Feminism, at its core, seeks to challenge structures of inequality and advocates for justice across genders, focusing especially on dismantling patriarchal norms and ensuring equitable opportunities for all. The media, including traditional outlets like television and newspapers, as well as digital platforms such as social media, plays a pivotal role in both promoting and distorting feminist ideals. Media is a powerful socialization tool that influences how gender roles are understood, accepted, or resisted. With the rise of digital technologies, social media has become a space where feminist discourses can be amplified rapidly, allowing diverse voices to call out injustice, share experiences, and mobilize communities for change. However, the same platforms frequently serve as arenas for misinformation and stereotyping. Studies indicate that while media coverage can raise awareness about gender issues, it often presents conflicting messages that confuse viewers about what feminism represents. This dynamic interaction between feminism and the media often results in the circulation of stereotypes that affect not only personal beliefs but also public attitudes and policy responses.

Objectives of Event

The objectives of the talk are;

  1. To critically examine how the media constructs and perpetuates gender stereotypes.
