Overview

October 10 is globally recognized as World Mental Health Day by the World Federation for Mental Health and the World Health Organization (WHO) to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world and to mobilize efforts to support those affected worldwide. The official theme for World Mental Health Day 2025 is "Access to Services – Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies", highlighting the crucial needs to improve and ensure access to mental health support during crises like natural disaster, conflicts, pandemics and other global emergencies. It is believed that 1 in 5 persons in places affected by war and conflicts suffer from a mental health illness. In these situations, feeling scared, anxious, or depressed is a common response to very stressful situations. On a global level, we might not be able to affect or alter everything we would wish to. However, there are steps we can do to prevent the present events from leaving us and others feeling inadequate and frustrated. Investing in mental health and psychosocial support enables families, communities, and economies to recover from crises, establish long-term resilience, and form stronger health-care systems. Making mental health and psychosocial assistance a priority in disaster response not only saves lives, but also strengthens communities and health-care systems in the long run.
