Overview

Sharda School of Law, Sharda University in Collaboration with Chicago Kent College of Law, Illinios, USA is organizing Overseas Training Program that will commence from 1st April to 12th April, 2025. This program offers an exceptional opportunity for law students and practicing lawyers from India to gain first-hand exposure on the subject Introduction to American Legal System by Prof. Kulmeet (Bob) Galhotra, Chicago Kent College of Law, Illinios, USA. The Timing of classes: 2 pm to 4 pm (Monday to Friday).

Objectives of Event

  1. To analyze the fundamental principles and structure of the American legal system, including the role of federalism, separation of powers, and judicial review.
  2. To examine the procedural and substantive aspects of U.S. law, focusing on constitutional law, civil rights, and the impact of landmark Supreme Court cases.
  3. To compare and contrast the American legal system with other legal traditions, particularly the Indian legal system, to identify key similarities and differences in legal principles and judicial processes.
  4. To evaluate the significance of international law and human rights within the American legal framework, exploring their application in domestic courts and global legal discourse.

Expected Outcomes:

After completing the course the students shall be able -

  1. To critically assess the structure and functioning of the American legal system, enabling them to analyze legal principles, judicial decisions, and constitutional frameworks with a comparative perspective.
  2. To apply their understanding of U.S. legal doctrines, international law, and human rights principles in academic research, legal practice, and further studies in global legal systems.

Kulmeet (Bob) Galhotra, Professor, Chicago Kent College of Law, Illinios, USA. Professor Galhotra teaches the fundamentals of the U.S. legal system, covering constitutional law, criminal law, torts, contracts, and business organizations. He has nearly 30 years of experience as an assistant public defender in Cook County, specializing in criminal defense and civil rights law. Additionally, he Served 17 years in the Homicide Task Force, exclusively handling homicide cases, and has tried 67 jury trials to verdict
