Overview

Department of Ophthalmology, School of Medical Sciences and Research is organizing various activities on the occasion of “World Glaucoma Awareness Week” from 10th March to 16th March 2024.

Glaucoma is a term used to describe a group of diseases of the eye characterized by progressive and irreversible damage to the optic nerve (nerve of the eye responsible for vision) and if untreated can lead to irreversible blindness. Glaucoma is a silent thief of sight.

In India, Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness and more than 90% of cases remain undiagnosed in the community. Early detection is the key to slowing progression of Glaucoma for which regular eye tests are the only way to detect the ‘Symptomless’ Glaucoma. At a later stage, it becomes irreversible and results in permanent blindness.
