Overview
Gender equality is a fundamental human right and a keystone for achieving sustainable development. In India, the advancement of gender equality has made significant progress on one hand, but on the other hand, it has persistent challenges. It has made improvements in sectors like education and health. Still, the deep-rooted cultural norms and systemic barriers continue to hinder the full realization of access and progress for girls and women. Despite progress, inequalities still exist in education, employment, pay, leadership, and household responsibilities. Women and marginalized genders often face limited opportunities, while men can also experience pressure from rigid gender expectations. Achieving gender equality requires challenging stereotypes, addressing biases, and promoting fairness in policies and everyday behavior.
In daily life, promoting gender equality means using respectful, inclusive language, sharing responsibilities fairly, and speaking up against discrimination. It involves supporting equitable opportunities in education and the workplace and encouraging diverse representation in leadership and media. Educating ourselves and others about equality and advocating for policies that support fairness — like equal pay and parental leave — are also key steps.
Gender equality benefits everyone by fostering more balanced, supportive environments where all individuals can thrive. Committing to fairness and respect, we help build a more just and compassionate society. The sustainable development goal (SDG) India Index shows that the scores of states range from 57 to 79 in 2023-24, marking a substantial improvement from the range of 42 to 69 in 2018. The government has taken targeted steps such as educating the girls, providing housing and subsidies, health insurance, and loans for small businesses.
