Overview
The SSET Department of Civil Engineering at Sharda University has organized an industrial visit for 3rd-year B.Tech Civil Engineering students to the 45 MGD (Million Gallons per Day) Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) Phase II at Kondli, Delhi, operated by Delhi Jal Nigam. Scheduled for November 13, 2024, the visit will commence at 9:00 AM, with students gathering at the Civil Engineering Department in Block 4. This educational site visit aims to provide students with a hands-on understanding of the complex processes involved in large-scale wastewater treatment operations.
During the visit, students will gain insights into the various stages of treatment, beginning with primary treatment for initial screening and grit removal, followed by secondary biological processes where microorganisms help break down organic pollutants. They will also observe tertiary treatment methods that include filtration and disinfection, ensuring the removal of remaining contaminants before discharge or reuse. The tour will cover sludge handling and management practices as well, which reduce the waste volume generated by the plant, emphasizing thickening, dewatering, and disposal processes.
Furthermore, students will be introduced to the regulatory standards and environmental compliance aspects that govern wastewater treatment, particularly the limits on contaminant levels set by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). This experience will provide an understanding of the operational challenges and innovative solutions, such as automation, IoT applications, and advanced data management systems, that help improve plant efficiency. Ultimately, this site visit will bridge theoretical knowledge with practical application, enriching students’ understanding of environmental engineering principles, operational management, and sustainable water treatment practices in the context of civil and environmental engineering.

Objectives of Event
The objective of this industrial visit is to provide 3rd-year B.Tech Civil Engineering students with a comprehensive understanding of wastewater treatment processes in a real-world setting, enhancing their practical knowledge and appreciation of the operational stages involved in treating large volumes of sewage. By observing the primary, secondary, and tertiary treatment stages firsthand, students will gain a detailed understanding of how contaminants are systematically removed, ensuring that treated water meets regulatory standards. Additionally, this visit aims to familiarize students with advanced sludge management techniques and highlight the importance of environmental compliance, emphasizing the role of regulatory bodies like the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). Through exposure to the challenges and innovations in wastewater treatment—such as automation, the use of IoT, and data management—the event will equip students with insights into the technological advancements that drive efficiency and sustainability in modern treatment plants. Overall, the objective is to bridge theoretical knowledge with practical application, fostering a well-rounded understanding of wastewater treatment within the broader context of environmental and civil engineering.
