Overview

The partograph (or partogram) is recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO), for monitoring labour wellbeing and progress. Concerns about limitations in the way the partograph is used in the clinical context and the potential impact on its effectiveness. A partograph is a systematic, graphical representation of labor progress, maternal conditions, and fetal well-being during childbirth. It is an essential tool for midwives, obstetricians, and nurses to monitor labor and ensure timely interventions, promoting the safety of both mother and baby.

Prolonged and obstructed labor is a significant cause of maternal morbidity and mortality. The use of the partograph would engender a remarkable reduction in the number of these deaths since abnormal markers in the progress of labor would be identified early on.
