Department of Mathematics, Sharda School of Basic Sciences and Research, Sharda University is organizing “International Seminar” on “An Overview of Statistical Meta-Analysis” in collaboration with “University of Maryland”.
Jun 3 @ 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm

Department of Mathematics, Sharda School of Basic Sciences and Research, Sharda University is organizing “International Seminar” on “An Overview of Statistical Meta-Analysis” in collaboration with “University of Maryland”. This will be held on Saturday, June 3, 2023, from 6 PM to 7 PM India time (8:30 AM – 9:30 AM USA time).
Meta-analysis is the statistical combination of results from two or more separate studies. Potential advantages of meta-analyses include an improvement in precision, the ability to answer questions not posed by individual studies, and the opportunity to settle controversies arising from conflicting claims. However, they also have the potential to mislead seriously, particularly if specific study designs, within-study biases, variation across studies, and reporting biases are not carefully considered.

Objectives:

  • To understand about Statistical Meta-Analysis (SMA).
  • To be familiar with the type of data that result from measurement of an outcome in an individual study, and to choose suitable effect measures for comparing intervention groups.
  • To apply applications of SMA abound in the literature.
  • Meta-analysis methods are variations on a weighted average of the effect estimates from the different studies.

Speaker: Professor Bimal Sinha, University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), Presidential Research Professor, UMBC & USM Board of Regents Research Professor.

Speaker details:

Professor Sinha is the Founder of the Statistics Graduate Program at UMBC. A 1973 Ph.D. in statistics from the University of Calcutta/India, Professor Sinha is an ex-faculty of the Indian Statistical Institute and the University of Pittsburgh. A Professor of Statistics at UMBC since 1985, Professor Sinha’s research activities span topics in theoretical and applied statistics, including multivariate analysis, linear models, ranked set sampling, environmental statistics, statistical meta-analysis, and data analysis under confidentiality protection. He has co-edited several volumes, and co-authored four books (John Wiley, Springer, Academic). He is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association and the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, and an elected member of the International Statistical Institute. His research has been funded by the US Environmental Protection Agency for about twenty years.

Jun 5 @ 9:00 am – Jun 30 @ 4:00 pm

Industrial Training is an important strategy to expose students to real work life situations and to equip them with the necessary skills that intensify their job acumen. Industrial training program or training related program can be continuously improved through formal review and evaluation of its outcome. A key element in an engineering curriculum is exposure to the Professional engineering practice sought through industrial training. Industrial training has traditionally been weighed as a potent grooming of the professional career of a fresh engineering graduate and it is the common method of harvesting skilled engineers. A well-structured industrial training program as a part of curricula has been recommended, but it is not made compulsory. In addition to this, other structured industrial projects within the engineering curriculum are required to strengthen the practical skills of the students.
